Sadly Clive lost a chicken at the week-end. He had noticed one getting lethargic and a bit fat but by the time he got round to picking it up to "massage the egg out" the poor thing died (of shock?) in his arms. Tim has told me that Castor Oil works too........
The remainder of the chickens have gone broody and having a Spring moult. What bizarre behaviour in contrast to the Black Rocks who always ran like clockwork until the pesky fox got them.
Yes we are booked for shearing on Thursday morning and guess what ? Gales and heavy rain forecast!
Capellini is getting ready to give birth in the next few weeks and Missy and Libby are looking very fat too. They are due in late June/July.
Had another enquiry about keeping alpacas with Pygmy goats and chickens so it must be the trend at present. Yes is the answer the alpacas are more than happy to share their space as long as they have at least one other alpaca companion..............
Filled up the big water tank after it's spring clean today only for Cha Cha to put her feet in it. The alpacas are so nosy and came racing up the field as soon as they heard the hose pipe being connected. They love being hosed down as regular blog followers will know, but no chance today as we don't want wet fleeces for Thursday.......... |

A bit of sunshine this week has put the Alpacas in a holiday mood. They have loved all the comings and goings this week as we have had earth movers and all sorts of machinery in to put our pond to rights and also to make a new ramp for the tractor and steps for us as the slope into the paddock was treacherous in the snow. They are so nosey and poor Polo was quite frustrated as he was unable to see what was going off. Lady, Ricardo and Pinky are just giddy youngsters and have been careering around the field just for the fun of it.
The female alpacas led by Cha Cha had the builders in stitches as they all queued up to roll down the new ramp. Even Chi Chi waited for a turn which was very cute to watch. Of course Clive and I have seen it happen many times and it just served as a reminder of just how much fun they are!
We were also thrilled to see some Kestrel nesting activity towards the wood and would be delighted if they returned to their old nesting site in the owl box.
Sadly all the activity around the pond last week seems to have scared off the wild ducks.............. |

Well it's that time of year again when the alpacas have to part with their lovely fleeces which have kept them all warm and snug throughout this awful winter. Last year we couldn't get them sheared until mid-July, although booked for May, as the weather was too wet and cold.
Here in Ashover we still have the "Brrrrrr" factor with an icy wind today and someone has told me that snow is forecast for the week-end. Were they joking? My emerging tulips look as though they want to curl up and die. Just have a show of daffodils and narcissus out and thank goodness for the primroses which do look lovely.
Still eating "comfort food"...... Shepherds Pie for tea.......
Jon has just sent me a photo of his first "Bird of Paradise" flower, grown in his garden in Australia. Clive and I bought the plant in a container when we first visited 3 years ago. What a contrast in climates, although our grandaughter Jessie longs to see the snow bless her! She was a toddler when they emigrated to Australia but at least Thomas has had a go at sledging down our hill before he left.
No sign of the Brown Hare lately or the kestrels. Only the dratted Buzzards circling around and fighting with the local crows. We do have two wild ducks still on the pond however which is surprising as they try to breed there every year but the foxes have usually had them for supper by now. Fingers crossed!
We have decided to sell a few of our first females as we now have some lovely second generation females to use but Clive and I are so attached to them that we can't bring ourselves to make the leap and advertise them...................... |

Can it possibly get any colder ? I doubt that the temperature has risen above freezing today as the pesky easterly wind has finally turned just enough to blow around the valley.
Nevertheless it's still fairly dry under foot and the sun has stayed out long enough for the alpacas to try out their home made slide down the field. Cha Cha and Capellini were last to roll around and then slide down the hill, it was so funny watching them queuing up just like Alton Towers.
No signs of the Brown Hares today, but we have had wild ducks on the pond again. I would love to add some ducks to our livestock but the foxes eat them up every year. I am considering the purchase of a floating duck island so that they stand a chance.
The Heron has also deserted us in the last week but still plenty of pheasants and rabbits for Chi Chi to chase around the field.
Clive has started pruning the vines, brrrrr...........
Sausage and mash for tea - can't get enough comfort food !

Yes, it is very picturesque but another heavy snowfall, over a foot in depth, in less than a /weekfortnight? is beyond a joke.
Like the rest of the country we have been affected badly in Derbyshire with all local schools closed yesterday and many main roads blocked by snow and abandoned cars. No post here, no bin collection (this is becoming a real problem as it we were missed last time and the time before due to bad weather).
However our lovely local milkman managed to deliver our milk in his land-rover this morning.
We were fed up to see that the sheer weight of snow had made the roof collapse on the new field shelter which we built 2 weeks ago.

Thank goodness the alpacas were all ok !
We have spent most of today feeding, taking warm water down, filling up hay nets and mending the roof.
Chi Chi still looks OK but rather bedraggled and she snuggles down in the back of her field shelter if her mum Cha Cha stays around.
